A dolphin was found dead at Sangat Ghat on the banks of river Ganga near Aunta in Mokama. According to officials, this is the second incident of dolphin killing in the last 72 hours. National Aquatic Zoologists have expressed deep concern over the killing of dolphins in this manner.

Locals say that both the Ganges dolphins were killed due to poaching and ongoing mechanized dredging to deepen the river bed. At the same time, experts believe that due to noise pollution in the river, the life of dolphins is also coming under stress. Day by day the number of steamers and big ships is increasing in Ganga. Because of this, the risk of death due to one noise pollution and second injury also increases.

Dam or barrage construction also affected

Dolphin man Dr. Sunil Chaudhary of Tilkamanjhi University Bhagalpur says that most of the deaths of dolphins are due to getting trapped in the nets of fishermen. This creature has also been affected by the construction of dam or barrage. Along with this, due to less water in the tributaries, the flow of Ganga has decreased, which is the biggest danger. Dolphins need flow as well as the depth of the river.

Indicator of clean water…

The Gangetic river dolphin is one of the four freshwater dolphin species in the world. The other three are found in the Yangtze River (now extinct) in China, the Indus River in Pakistan and the Amazon River in South America. The places where Ganges dolphins are found, it is believed that the water there is very clean because dolphins do not live in dirty water.

Can make 600 voices…

Nature has made the dolphin’s throat unique, so that it can make about 600 different types of sounds. Dolphin is the only animal that can whistle. There are an estimated 3,000 Gangetic dolphins in India, of which Bihar is home to nearly half. This fact came to the fore during a comprehensive survey of about one thousand km of Ganga and its two tributaries Gandak and Ghaghra in Bihar.
